Thanks for the feedback. To give some more detail based on your response:
– all the people who have access to the site have access to create and edit posts
– only one admin (the original admin) is actually able to edit items that are duplicated
– all people who can normally create and edit posts are still able to do so (except of course if the post was duplicated)

I do think it might be something that is happening in conjunction with a another plugin, but not sure why or how. This was not a problem until recently, it used to work just fine.
