O.K. that’s good info. Thank you both.

WOW! Forgot I left this window open and didn’t post my reply. Anyway it worked! I had two lines missing off wp-config. One of them was the Disallow file mods and I added the two lines and it now works so I’ve been updating like crazy.

    Great! Thanks.

If I try to activate Yoast SEO plugin I am getting this error message.
Warning: include(/home/wurlitze/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/interface-wpseo-wordpress-integration.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/wurlitze/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/vendor/composer/ClassLoader52.php on line 186

Also as explained earlier, the Plugin button on the sidebar does not have any dropdown menu so I can’t uninstall or reinstall or delete from the dashboard.

    Any ideas?

No I think this is the remnants of a hack that started all this problem 3 weeks ago. I found a plugin I never uploaded called Itr-popup-plugin which is an age verification popup for a porn site. I have deleted it but wordpress itself is still not fully right. The popups link on the sidebar in the dashboard does not appear when hovered over. So there is no easy Delete option (or add or anything!). I deleted the popup folder using FTP.
I have already updated wp-admin, wp-includes to the latest version, and all loose files in public-html.

O.K. this is where I am up to.
I did the manual upload and have the site back, but the plugins were missing and there is no Add Plugin option when I hover over the Plugin link on the sidebar in wp-admin.
I noticed on the server there was no folder called plugins when I was about to upload the new one but did it anyway, however there was a folder in there called plugins_bk (whatever it is). When I uploaded plugins I have just the default Hello Dolly and Askit (or whatever). So I looked in plugins_bk and found the missing plugins listed. so I changed plugins folder to plugins2 and renamed plugins_bk to plugins. I now have all the plugins visible but I still don’t have an Add Plugin option anywhere in wp-admin. Also all my plugins are deactivated. Have I missed a file somewhere. Do I need to upload the Index file in the Content folder?

    Hi James.
    SUCCESS!!!
I am not sure what file did the trick but I did reload wp-admin and wp-includes and it didn’t change. But then I uploaded all ‘loose’ files in public-html EXCEPT! wp-config. And it came back to life.
    Many thanks.
The File Manager wouldn’t work but FileZilla worked a treat.
Just a footnote though….Telling a novice to “delete all the files on your server” is maybe not what you had in mind exactly. 🙂

Ok I get the idea. unfortunately the file manager isn’t working for me. I need to download an FTP client from somewhere.

Sorry James I didn’t see your reply, I should have refreshed the page! OK so now that I found the backup zip file, can I not extract it on my own computer and just upload the corrupted file (though I am not sure which file that might be.) I get what you are saying I am just nervous of deleting everything except the folder and file you mention. It sounds rather drastic. I don’t doubt what you are saying, but I don’t have a clear picture of what I am actually doing. Also, if it is a backup would I be o.k. uploading everything, given that it is a backup. It’s ten days old but it’s the structure I am scared of destroying not the actual content as I can easily put that up to date.

Excuse my ignorance but it is several years since I installed my website and haven’t given it much thought since, so I am a bit rusty/clueless. Download wordpress to where? I can use FTP but you say to delete your copies of everything on the server except wp-config. and wp-content. Presumably this is only files within wordpress folders that I delete and replace? I then (I’m guessing) transfer across all wordpress files that I deleted back to the server folders except wp-content and w-config?

I did find the backup file location but I can’t get to it as the website is not recognised.

Well thanks for the reply lee. I think the problem is/was something to do with the files in the media folder. They appear in the folder in dashboard but were missing from the pages themselves. I uploaded a new picture from my computer for the header (rather than one from the media folder) and it seemed to work.
And then I went back and manually inserted all the images which were missing and that seems to have worked too.
So I don’t know what I did but it works now anyway. Thanks.

Hmm. I fixed it but not quite sure what did it. Oh well 🙂

    Blimey I think I cracked it 🙂
Must be something to do with the 2011 theme. I changed the theme and the header was still missing, so uploaded a new picture to use as a header rather than the ones in Media folder and it worked.
I then changed it to 2011 and it didn’t have a header.
Then I changed it back to the other theme and it worked fine.
So I suppose I now uninstall 2011 and install it again and see if that fixes it.

That’s the sort of idea lee but maybe a bit more specific about what is stored where, etc.
I have looked at the Moving WordPress information and think I followed it, but obviously there is some snag.
Ok let me break it down a bit then.

Something is requesting a header image, which is then displayed on the main page. Or should do, but it isn’t.
So what is requesting the image? (maybe the address in that file is wrong so it can’t find an image).
Where should the image be?.(maybe it is missing).
Activating another theme does not resolve the problem. So the theme itself isn’t where the ‘glitch’ is.

Looks like I am going to have to read the Codex all the way through until I crack it.

    The theme is 2011.

I need to know this level of detail (or maybe not) because I not only want to learn to drive but know what the engine is doing. It is not working, therefore to understand why it isn’t working it would help me if I knew what it was supposed to do in the first place.
    If that makes sense.
I am presuming that the way to understand wordpress, use it properly and maybe even one day tinker with it, is to know what it does and why.
