  • Hello,

Although I have <<not>> used the Yahoo! “automatic install” for WordPress, I have uploaded and used WP 2.0.4, 2.0.5, 2.0.7, and most recently, WP 2.1 on Yahoo! (All downloaded from WordPress.org.) I have not encountered any problems with Yahoo! or running WP on Yahoo!

Initially when I installed WP 2.0.4, I could not get WP to install. After a few minutes–and rechecking my <<wp-config.php>> file entries–I discovered via the Yahoo! online documentation that the MYSQL setting ‘localhost’ term–define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’)–must be changed to ‘mysql’–otherwise, WP won’t install. (It fell into the 1% of installations that need to change this value.) For me, it did not take too much time to install WP and get it working. Of course, a manual install requires installing PHP Admin, MYSQL database, and properly configuring the database name and passwords and other related items. PHP Admin, MYSQL, and the WP “auto install” are provided by Yahoo! with their small business hosting plans. (And making sure that you put WP into a separate directory folder for your blog, unless you want to use WP as your “website.”)

WP upgrades have not gone too well, although it might not have anything to do with Yahoo! after reading many of the WP support messages over my WP usage timeframe. A clean install took care of the problems immediately (except 2.0.5 which required the ‘WP Tuneup’ plugin to workaround some WP bugs); however, I hope to avoid this “upgrade” method in the future. This problem might caused by an improperly documented item or step in the upgrade process that caused different problems for every upgrade, since I was very careful about what I was doing and triple-checked every action prior to doing it.

As a final note, perhaps a member can state specifically what features do not work on Yahoo! With this information, you can determine if these features are important to you. For example, there may be a plugin or some other WP features that you wish to use–and that I am not using–that do not work, which may better help you with your hosting decision.

Nice design. However, if you plan to market to Macintosh users, you need to check your design and make sure it is compatible with Apple Safari.

On Safari, the search box is drawn directly over your corporate logo. I checked it in Firefox on the Mac; it looks fine with your search box located on the right. I am no longer on a PC (switched back to the Mac and I will never go back), but IE was the most problematic browser to ensure total consistency (vs. Firefox, Navigator).

No, the green looks fine on my monitor…although I’m on a Mac too. 🙂
(I was expecting that super bright green that is really annoying on the eyes. If green is your overall theme that matches your blog/content, the green you selected looks fine.)

I’m not sure if this will achieve your objective–I believe if you enable and configure posting via email (under the writing option) in your admin panel, you can email (and subsequently post) new blogs from your Blackberry. However, do you really want to do this? Sure, it’s cool (I am a Blackberry user too), but over the long-term, you’re going to do serious damage to your thumbs from all that typing!!! BB is best for short messages only. For long messages, including blogs, it’s best to use a standard keyboard.

Resolved by performing a new (clean) reinstall of WordPress 2.0.7 with a new (empty) MySQL database. Suggest having someone on the WP team re-review the upgrade process prior to releasing 2.1. I am confident that I followed the upgrade instructions exactly. The instructions did not work when upgrading from 2.0.5 to 2.0.7. Thanks again for the suggestion…much appreciated.

I’m not sure if my prior Akismet key problem (when I upgraded to 2.0.5) is the same as what you are experiencing. I had an invalid key problem and I re-entered the key and it resolved the problem. (I have not been able to get the upgrade to 2.0.7 working because the password field is not available, so I can’t check or test the Akismet plug-in.)

Thanks for the suggestion. I performed the above suggestions–no changes. Both previously stated problems still exist.
