I Had the same problem.
Turned out to be the browser.
Started to use google chrome and now it works.
A text box between the slider and the Featured Areas is in the theme!
Go to theme options and choose homepage.
Below the settings for the slider you have a check box “main message”
check it and enter text in the fields below and voila!
You can also include a button with text that works as a link.
