@dd32 thank you– that cleared up the PHP issue. The PHP alert and the “need to update” alert were stacked on top of each other so I thought they were the same thing. Thanks for clearing that up!

Now I am getting something else; something about “Scheduling failed. Error message: The response is not a valid JSON response” however I have already found an extant thread addressing that so I’ll just read along there.

    Thanks again.

I’ll try that. Thank you for the insight!

Addendum: I also cannot access anything in my “Media Library”. I should have over 750 images in there, but the progress wheel simply spins endlessly. When I try to upload new media content, it appears to load at first but later I get a red status box that says “Upload failed”.

When I try to “re-install PHP update” I also get a red status box that says “Update failed”.

When I try to schedule a new post, I get the same status box that says “Schedule failed”.

    A lot going on!

Thanks for the insight– done and done. Looks like things are working again now.

I’ve been running some test images & the like since yesterday, and folks have come in, poked around, commented, and no catastrophes. I’ll go ahead and consider this settled, and thank you for your help & advice.

The problems are slowly getting fixed, but there still seems to be an issue with the connection to WordPress functions, specifically anything having to do with Jetpack. I get error messages like this:

unknown_token: It looks like your Jetpack connection is broken. Try disconnecting from WordPress.com then reconnecting.

I also re-loaded a couple of lost pages from the webcomic so they could at least be viewed, and I also had this:

Something which should never happen, happened. Sorry about that. If you try again, maybe it will work.

    Error code: unknown_user

–Which is weird, because I was logged in as Admin at the time. Below, in the field where I was trying to re-link to Twitter feed, I got this:

    Connected as: @213thBattalion (Shared) ×

Jetpack: [auth_failed] Authorization header was malformed

But some good news! Most functions are restored, even though once I touch the forbidden fruit of Jetpack reconnections, everything collapses back to “Internal Service Error”… but I was briefly able to look in my WordFence logs and found the original messages that kicked this off!

I took screenshots but I’ll just summarize here. The message were as follows:

    wp-content/themes/comicpress/functions.php
Not a core, theme, or plugin file
Issue detected 12 hours and 14 minutes ago
    Severity: Critical
    Status: New

The file appears to be installed by a hacker to perform malicious activity. If you know about this file you can choose to ignore it to exclude it from future scans.

The text we found in this file that matches a known malicious code is: “edoced_46esab(“.

The message was the same for the following files:
    wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/functions.php
    wp-content/themes/twentythirteen/functions.php
    wp-content/themes/twentyfourteen/functions.php

    I hope this helps.

The host tech support guys came back and found that the links weren’t working within the site, and they fixed it. Transcript:

However, the links were loading with page not found. This is becsue the rewrite code was missing in .htaccess file. I have added the following rewrite code in .htaccess file and now the links on the website is working fine

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress

So now the site can be viewed, but if I try to do anything in my Admin functions, I still get the “Internal Server Error”. Interestingly enough, when I go to the host site’s control panel to enter the site through the WordPress icon –the backdoor to my Admin screen– I also get the Internal Server Error.

I can’t help but wonder if Wordfence saw a legitimate piece of code and for some reason interpreted it as part of a malware. When Wordfence alerted me to the “suspicious code” it showed it to me, and it was maybe 5 characters. there was a lowercase “d” and a single “{” and a few other characters and that was it. I know, not exactly a treasure map of info…

I’ve tried a couple backups from my host admin site, and contacted their (FatCow) tech support. They provided a backup with as much information as they could, and it looks like most of my stuff is there, but when I try to go to any place in the WordPress Dashboard I get this message:

    “Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, cgiadmin@yourhostingaccount.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

–I’d hate to have to completely re-load WordPress from scratch since that would pretty much make me have to re-load a year and a half’s worth of comics (not to mention all the lost commentary) but it’s beginning to look like that’s all that’s left…

    Here’s my site: http://www.bohicablues.com/

Here’s what I get when I try to maneuver to another page like a regular visitor: http://www.bohicablues.com/2015/02/02/?post_type=comic
    (Basically a 404 Not Found)

And when I try to do anything in the WP dashboard, I get the first message, about the Internal Server Error.

FatCow says it’s a WordPress issue, since it comes up when trying to access any WP stuff on the site. It looks like WP can’t connect with my site and vice versa.

Yes, thank you all for the advice. Things are up and running again and –should I admit it out loud? Yeah, I got WordPress for Dummies.

    Cheers!

    Error log from FatCow:

    20131006T195806: bohicabluescom.fatcow.com/ss_2248390_YqOU_install.php
chmod: cannot access `concrete/css/legacy/ccm.ui’: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `copy.css’: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `concrete/css/legacy/ccm.dashboard’: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `copy.css’: No such file or directory

Also, if it clarifies anything, I tried using the Weebly domain builder but I’m less than thrilled (I’m actually trying to make a webcomic so I’ll load ComicPress once I get things back under control). At the moment I tried to just uninstall and reinstall but I still have the blank page o’ nothingness, and what little I can see through FatCow is the Weebly version.

    Whew, beer time.

Is this the proper WP-DEBUG plugin site?

    http://kaloyan.info/krumo/docs/

I’ve installed the plugin but so far no data about what has caused the white screen…

OK, I’m setting up a ticket with FatCow to see what’s going on. Also poking around myself in various files, but trying to be real careful since I’m such a n00b at this. I’m reading through the WP_DEBUG stuff now… from my perspective, it’s a little “thick”. I’m not able to discern where I find WP_DEBUG to enable it (I can’t find anything labeled “/wp -content/ directory. Maybe not looking in the right place..). Thanks, though, I at least have a hint what to look for; I have to learn this stuff at some point…
