Thanks, Malte and Brian for your help – I’ve tried both suggestions, but haven’t yet come up with anything! I think there may be an error in the original install somewhere, so am going to try a fresh install.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know it was the most stupid thing – I forgot to change the home url in my custom menu
I have learnt a great deal about giving wordpress it’s own directory though 😉
