I wanted to activate a new theme – the Twenty Twelve Parent Theme. to rule out the child theme from the list of possible causes.
The links in the “Latest News” widget on the home page don’t work either and the same issue is occurring on all my other sites that use a Twenty Twelve Child theme

Please note that not all the links in the top menu use the “category” folder e.g. northwestlimousin.com/gallery/ or northwestlimousin.com/north-west-limousin-show-team-rules/ (located in a sub menu) so that is why I thought that it might be a bigger problem. All of the sites have worked fine for many months and the problem has just occurred within the past week or so
