Hi! There are some known issues with images getting posted that I’m still trying to track down, so thanks for letting me know. If you’re embedding the images in the email (like by dragging them in or copy-and-paste), can you try just attaching them as files to see if that gets them to show up?

    Thanks!

    Hi MissSlsp,

You’re correct that right now, the plugin can only create individual posts. Can you tell me more about what you mean by “assign these posts to a particular page” — are you talking about adding each email to one Page (as in, a page created under Pages->Add New on the WordPress Admin dashboard), or about having them all show up on a single sub-page on your site (like a category or tag archive page)?

You can accomplish the latter by assigning a category or tag to the posts using shortcodes. You could even customize your theme not to show those posts on the front page.

The former is a lot more complicated and I’m not sure how it would work, but I’m open to suggestions. Would each new email’s contents get appended to the existing page? Before or after the existing content? How would you tell WordPress which page you wanted it to appear on?

    Hi,

You’re just attaching the pictures, not embedding them within the email?

It sounds like what’s happening is they’re getting correctly uploaded and attached to the post, but the plugin isn’t adding a “gallery” shortcode for you. If you edit the post, do you see a gallery shortcode anywhere in it?

    Hi Guido,

It’s indeed strange if that same login info works with Postie but not Post By Email. Have you verified you’re using the correct port/SSL settings?

Have you upgraded to the latest version of the plugin?

If you do that and the problem still exists, please let me know the following info so I can track down the problem:

What version of WordPress and PHP do you have? What mailbox settings are you using for POP and IMAP (URL, port number, and SSL)?

If you enable WP_DEBUG and try it again, do any errors get displayed?

    Hi nesmith2135,

Thanks for sending those test emails! The full content did post correctly for all four messages (including the HTML formatting) on my test system… so now we need to figure out what’s different about your setup.

What are your mailbox settings (URL, protocol, port and whether SSL is enabled; not your login and password)? What version of WordPress and PHP? Have you updated to the most recent plugin version (should be 1.0.4b)?

Next, can you enable WP_DEBUG and check to see if any errors are displayed (either within WordPress or in your PHP error log)? I can give you more info about how to do that if you’re not sure.

I will fix it, but two hours is a little bit much to ask. 🙂

Can you forward some example messages that don’t work to postbyemailplugin@gmail.com?

    Plugin Contributor Kat Hagan

    (@codebykat)

That’s progress, believe it or not. 🙂

I haven’t tested with PDF or documents (I assume you mean .doc files?). I will do that. Probably it’s trying to create a thumbnail of them or something silly like that.

What do you mean when you say “another that had both an attached and an imbedded email”? Embedded image? What email client are you using to send your test messages?

    Hi dainty,

It does work for myself and quite a few folks, so I have some confidence we can get it working for you, too. 🙂

First off – do NOT use the original (built-in) version. For one thing, there is a known bug with it that often results in empty posts, just like what you’re seeing. ONLY use the plugin!

With that out of the way…

some forwarded emails are rejected as spam with bounce message.

If they’re getting bounced back by your email provider, that’s something you need to take up with your provider. You might be able to “whitelist” your email so it never gets bounced as spam.

If I add an image to that above message (and change subject) it just posts an empty post.
Forwarded emails with text and images become empty posts
a Forwarded email with 8 attached images it added them to a gallery but left a big gap between images and none of the text,

I just released version 1.0.4b, which fixes some text processing bugs that might have caused this problem. Can you update the plugin and let me know whether any or all of these messages get through?

    Thanks!

I believe this to be fixed in the version I just released, 1.0.4b. Please test again and let me know if I’m wrong!

Oh, I just found it — looks like an issue with “smart” quotes. One second.

    Hi again Ryan,

I just tested and I can’t seem to get this to happen. Have you upgraded the plugin to the latest version? Are you connecting via POP or IMAP?

Also, what version of WordPress and PHP are you running?

Oh, and one more question – is this email an HTML or plain-text email? (If you’re not sure, let me know what mail client you used to send it and I can tell you how to figure it out.)

    (@codebykat)

    Hi Ryan,

To determine whether a user is allowed to post without review, the plugin looks up the sender’s email address. If there’s a WordPress user with that email, and the user has the publish_posts capability (Author, Editor or Admin by default), it will automatically publish it. Otherwise, it will get set to pending so an admin can review.

Is the email you’re sending from the same as your email in your WordPress profile? (Under Users->Your Profile). If you’re sending from that address and it’s still being marked as pending, please re-open this thread. 🙂

Hmm, that’s no good. Maybe you could try enabling WP_DEBUG in your wp-config.php and seeing if that gets it to print out an actual error message instead of just an internal server error? (e.g. http://codex.wordpress.org/WP_DEBUG )

You can also see if there’s anything being reported in your Apache error log (usually something like /var/log/apache2/error_log but it depends on your system).

It might be a good idea to completely delete the plugin and reinstall from scratch, just in case a file got messed up somewhere along the line.

Sorry you’re having so much trouble with it! Please let me know how it goes.

    Hi amar22,

    Thanks for reporting this issue!

With the automatic check, does the plugin log anything in the activity log, or is it just empty?

If you connect over IMAP, does the same thing happen? Is your test email very large (e.g. maybe has attachments)?

    (@codebykat)

    Hi Sarah,

Thanks for testing this out! Can you let me know if you’re still seeing this error with the latest version of the plugin?

If so, what mailserver settings are you using?
