Don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it- it worked in firefox (Edge keeps randomly crashing and Google seemed to not allow photo or zip file uploads).
thanks Sinip for your advice too- I have had to reinstall windows & wipe my hard drive and things seem to be working OK as far as uploading is concerned now.
