thank ya — definitely not start over, but duplicate the folder & activate the child theme. thanks for the heads up.

Ahhh, I figured dreamhost could be part of the problem.

I tried the two plugins you suggested and it did help the page load, but it also messed up the slideshow banner that came with the theme.
