Okay it looks like the sign up is behaving is working now! Thank you so much for all your help!
@erania-pinnera That makes sense! I went and turned on HTTPS enforce through my Siteground hosting and did a Manual Cache Purge using the SG Speed Optimizer plugin. My wonderful tester has not had a chance to do her work yet, but I will let you know the results, thank you!
@eri32s98 The last time I touched the subscribe block was when I I removed then reinserted the subscribe block out of curiosity four days ago, as noted in my last post. I tested it as described in that post and have not touched it, or even signed into my WP since.
“have you had other reports from mobile users?” No, I have not been advertising this subscription availability as I have been so disappointed in how it is (not) working. All tests have been thanks to friends who have helped me test functionality.
I removed then reinserted the subscribe block out of curiosity, and another test user (desktop) was able to interact with it with no problems, with a “healthy” email confirmation. But then another user on mobile got the same old 404 issue. Here is their email:
Confirmation subscription email user 2 (after removing user as subscriber) (07/07/24)
Confirm your subscription

However! This same user went to their desktop and attempted to subscribe again and was able to interact with the confirm email link just fine. So the problem may be with mobile? (although user 1 from earlier attempts was trying with desktop)
What’s particularly interesting is despite the 404 on trying to confirm, test users did receive post emails! Neither user had a WP subscription before this test.
These emails and confirmation links will be out of date but here they are (removing blog favicon and Jetpack footer):
Confirm subscription email user 1 (06/30/24):
