Sorry I didn’t explain what I did better. I thought I had been in my last post. It wasn’t as involved as what you had, though. My install is fairly basic. The only plugin that I have activated is Jetpack.

    Here’s what I found:

My host defaults to PHP4 still.
I forced my site to use PHP5 by making the correct applicable change in my .htaccess file.
My issues (updating and Jetpack issues) disappeared once I did that.

I know WordPress works with PHP4, but there was something in my hosts PHP4 setup that my install didn’t seem to like.

I just solved the problem. I was having issues using the auto-update system also, and looked up some info on that. Someone mentioned adding some lines to associate PHP5 with .php files in my .htaccess file. I did so, and the update started working. I thought I’d try Jetpack again, and it is running the way it is supposed to, now. It just didn’t like something in the PHP4 setup, I guess.

I’m going to set this to closed now. Thanks.

Although it’s strange. I just removed it, and uploaded a new copy of it (1.1.2) and I get HTTP 500 error when I try to Activate it. I also cannot edit the file from WordPress. The page doesn’t load completely.

All I do is FTP the plugin over to my server, and then go into WordPress and do whatever setup is needed. I’m running Windows Vista, and my server is Linux based. I shouldn’t need to do any permissions changes, should I?

Unfortunately, I don’t have access to the Apache error logs with my host. I’m using a standalone site.
I’m going to dig around some more to see if I can find anything to help.

I just unlinked my blog from WordPress.com, and suddenly everything works the way it is supposed to. When I re-linked it, the problems come back.

I just tried activating the Hello Dolly plugin, and it worked. Activating Akismet for deactivating Jetpack give the Error 500.
