Thanks, but as I stated I need to exclude more than one category at a time. The method you described appears to only work for the exclusion of a single category.
My problem is exactly the same as that found at http://wordpress.org/support/5/7693 except I’d like it after the content instead of before.
Your suggestion (if I read it right, by putting the ‘more’ link inside the excerpt instead of inside index.php) yielded this:
