  • I get this too. It works fine for a few days then suddenly one morning all I get is 404 Not Found for any page in the wp-admin folder so I cannot get at the login page or the dashboard to administer the site. It must think I’m some sort of intruder and locks me out. However, there is no message on the iThemes log except a report of the 404 for the requested page (eg the login page).

I have two WP subwebs, one of which is a private testing site and the other is ‘live’ and linked to from my main (non-WP) site. What’s interesting is that the test site is completely unaffected – it’s only the live site that has this problem. Both have iThemes 4.5.6 and it’s set up pretty-much identically on both sites.

The only way to bring it back to life is to rename the plugin, log in, rename it back and re-activate iThemes. I got that solution after posting this problem on the general WP Forum as at that time I didn’t know it was iThemes-related. If anyone on here has more-specialised knowledge about these things, I’d be happy to hear from them.

I’m not convinced deleting and reinstalling it would fix things, but would probably be persuadable if it was guaranteed to to work. Is it possible to retain all the Settings when doing that?

Running WP 4.1 (although this started under 4.0.1) under the Weaver II theme.

mbrsolution: Yes I have, but doing a Reset to clear any data inserted into the form and stay on that page is not the same as saying, “Hey, I was only looking at this screen to see what was on it and now I want to get outta here”. Which is what I really want to do (or give my users the facility to do): hopefully using a dedicated button that says Cancel or Goback or something that tells the system the user doesn’t want to be there any more.

Mr Challis: As the ultimate expert on the subject I respect your comment but I’m afraid I have no idea what it means. I’m just using your excellent plugin to create a form (no mention of popups anywhere that I’ve noticed), and I was just wondering if there was any way of going back to the calling page without the user having to use the browser Back button if they didn’t want to fill it in at that particular time.

I have to admit that the site using this product isn’t a full WordPress site and is primarily (shock-horror) built with Frontpage. It contains (for one reason or another) several instances of links to go back to the ‘previous’ page and it seemed to me a reasonable thing to have a link back to the calling page on a Form page created by Fast Secure Contact Form. Sorry to be so non-standard.

If it’s not possible, then so be it. Thanks for your time.

    Merry Christmas.

Well well well. I renamed my plugins starting with the most recently updated ones. First up was Updraftplus (does backups). Nothing, same as before. Next was iThemes Security (previously Better WP Security), and bingo! I was immediately able to log in as Admin and see the Dashboard.

I renamed it back, reactivated it, logged out and was able to log back in, so whatever happened seems to have gone away. Maybe it thought I was some kind of intruder and prevented access. If this happens again at least I’ll know what to do.

Thanks for the suggestion. Once again the experts save the day.

    Hi Matt

Thanks. I have iThemes Security installed and set up to their recommendations as far as I can (I’m not too technical in that department). It’s set up exactly the same on my testing site and that isn’t affected.

Not sure how to disable plugins via FTP but it’s getting late here now and I’ll try to look into that in the morning.

I finally figured it out, and the reason might be useful for anyone else who finds themselves in the same situation (particularly noobs like me).

I was using a non-standard editor called “Dean’s FCKEditor For WordPress” and, as I discovered eventually, it was amending the shortcodes I had put into the relevant pages all by itself. I guess it thought it was being helpful or something but it added <p>..</p> tags round the whole shortcode and changed the actual quotation marks to $quots. So, the browser just ignored them.

I changed back to the standard WP editor and bingo they all worked after cleaning them up. It’s probably advisable to put these shortcodes into the page in your editor’s ‘text’ or ‘source’ view rather than the wysiwyg view and check them after updating or publishing just to ensure they stay kosher.

If Chad reads this he might want to put a note to this effect into the documentation for his admirable WP-Members plugin.

    Totally agree.

I’m just developing my first WP site and only joined the forum yesterday. I posted a query in the Plugins forum, made the mistake of closing the window and now I can’t even find my post using the search system! It might well be in the results somewhere but as there are scores of pages from the whole WP site instead of just the forum I’m interested in to look through, I just don’t have the time.

Nobody’s replied to my post yet so I guess it’ll just languish in limbo till someone does. Not holding my breath as it seems there are posts going into that forum every minute or two so it will be well buried by now and nobody will be seeing it.

This search system is very rudimentary compared to most other forums I have seen and used, many of which use what looks like a standard UI.
