To add some further background.
I have upgraded to the 3.1 version from 2.7 in the hope that this would have sorted the problem but it did not.
I have also tried to swithc to the Twenty Ten 1.2 by the WordPress team
or others that I have available but there is no chance that to get rid of the 404.

The problem in loggin in was the incorrect user name which by default is set up to
Admin.
Hope it can help someone else in my conditions
