Thanks for the response Greg. That link does look like it’s relevant. I had installed wordpress through Ubuntu’s repositories, but since it’s a test server and I figured I’d learn more, I started over and installed by downloading and installing directly. Since I’m installed now directly in /var/www/html (as opposed to having /usr/share/wordpress symbolically linked) that seems to have resolved the issue.
The plugin is now working beautifully and I learned some more about permissions and working on a linux server.
