The website loads fine now, back to normal.
And the plugin successfully did a backup as soon it the site was back online.

Thanks George – I went into my HostGator control panel, then PHP Configuration and was able to update the PHP for the site there. I don’t know why it wasn’t auto-updating?
Paul – clicking back just gave the same error message.
