Regarding the URL, it uses the information from WordPress. Make sure you also have https:// in your WordPress settings (under General).

Thanks for the note! I’ve contacted WPEngine, since there is no reason not to use this plugin. The old v2 was a bit problematic regarding the memory usage (but that issue was solved years ago with v3). So far they did not reply to my email beside of the auto-reply.

Please try if the new beta version fixed the bug. There was one problem with empty archives, which could lead to the Missing-XML-Tag error.

Your error sounds like an error you get from your Browser, not from GWT.

Your sitemap looks fine! Makre sure you allow Google to crawl your site:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Privacy_Screen
If everything looks fine there, resubmit your sitemap in GWT.
