I deactivated all my plugins and reactivated them one by one until I found the problem. The bad plugin was the WP category sticky posts plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/category-sticky-posts/
I think it created a problem because the magazine basic theme already has a sticky post feature, although that’s just a guess.

OK, never mind– I found an old topic that told me to reload the functions.php file through my server/host, which I did, and now I can log in again. *breaths sigh of relief*
