I have worked with the theme author and all is okay with the theme until I activate Next Gen.

This problem only started after updating to WP 3.8.2

The theme worked with Next Gen before that update.

That would be perfect, do I need to download the developer version again?

As when I tried “*” I got a zero.

Yes, download the developer version again and the new shortcode worked a dream.
