I have installed FWP plugin and imported feeds from engadget.com and gizmodo.com. Posts from both the feeds were imported successfully and featured image for each post was generated automatically
Could you please provide the RSS feed URLs you are trying to import

Are the images on your own server or you are linking via external URL? Linking via external URL requires the PHP configuration setting ‘allow_url_fopen’ to be enabled
Please turn on the debug mode in configuration and see if you are getting any errors

I have tested the plugin with WordPress-3.5.1 and it worked fine for me. Which version of WordPress are you using? Have you tried with any other images?

You don’t need to edit any code for this. As mentioned at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar-archives/faq/ , you just need to add
category=<category-name>to the URLFor example, http://example.com/wordpress-directory/calendar-archive-page/?calendar_year=2013&category=test
If you can provide me the URL of your wordpress blog then I will test if it works (or doesn’t) for your blog
