I was trying to import another file with option to download/upload attachment files (with that option off, error doesn’t show up).

If it can be of any use, I have one prototype site where a carousel gallery with images containing sizing information appears to work just fine:

A further two sites, however, do display the wrong image in the carousel if file names contain sizing information.
It appears that the system picks-up the smallest of the image’s thumbnails in the /wp-content/uploads directory instead of the original one.
