I’m quite new to the entire Paypal / shopping cart experience. May be a little off topic, but I’m not sure I get how to make a full test cycle without sandbox accounts:
Do you use live accounts for both vendor and buyer, making real transaction? Do you not pay fees to Paypal? From the buyer side, you need to use a real payment card I guess… I’m going to google this anyway, but your advice is welcome. Thanks again.

I have realised the url that is triggered by the checkout button is https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr
Should it not be https://www.sandbox.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr, knowing that I have selected ‘sandbox’ in the paypal options?
