We figured it out:
float: left; needs to be removed from nav.
float: right; needs to be removed from nav ul.
Then it works.
The same problem now occurs at our installation.
It is no longer possible to add slides to existing or new slideshows. It seems like other settings are saved.
Maybe it has to do with WordPress 4.4. incompatibility. We upgraded to 4.4. and basically did not change anything else since.
