OK –I’ll do that — however, I don’t really know if it is a bug or simply something that is tied to my specific configuration. The wonderful thing about Pods is that it is infinitely customizeable — but that also means there are infinite numbers of ways that we users can manage to introduce new issues. But I will add a note to github as at least something to look into or consider with coding.

Thank you. As noted, my site has a number of different custom post types, created with the Pods plugin. Relevanssi is wonderful because of the way it allows me to fine-tune how the search facility works with various different types of posts & categories — and I am guessing that the PHP error is triggered only when the search leads to specific custom post types.

To help me better understand the problem, can you clarify whether the_content filter in the /lib/excerpts-highlights file has any function other than managing the highlighting feature for the search results? I am seeing highlighting working without any apparent problem even with that filter disabled … but I agree that it is best long-term for me to find a better solution.

Thanks — I found that @ line 51 in the file — and commenting it out does seem to have eliminated the error.

Would that impact function of the plugin in any other way that I should be aware of?

If I disable the Relevanssi “Custom search result snippets” options and run the same search, there is no error message.

So it does seem to be tied to the Relevanssi custom excerpts option, rather than the specific search results.

@msaari — I tested by using a search that caused the error and doing the same search with Relevanssi de-activated as well as activated. If the plugin is de-activated.. then no error.

So I am back to thinking that there is something that is happening with Relevanssi on some, but not all, searches that is causing the error. My system does have a large array of custom post types being indexed — so it is not simply posts & pages.

Other users reporting this PHP 7.2 warning in other context have said that it occurs if they use get_the_excerpt () and the page has no excerpt.

    This is at https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/42814

On my site, some pages/posts have excerpts and some don’t. I currently have Relevanssi options set to create custom excerpts — so I see the custom excerpt displayed on the results page — but I am wondering if there is still something in the Relevanssi code that might be triggering the error.

It’s not a huge problem and I can always revert to PHP 7.1… but Relevanssi is such an amazing plugin that I’d also like to see this nailed down for the future.

Thanks for the feedback — I didn’t know if this was tied to Relevanssi, the theme, or core wordpress function. I just reported it here because it was tied to search function. My theme template does not seem to use the_content() in search results — but that is helpful information to narrow down the source of the issue.

Aerin– I trid installing that update but didn’t even get as far as testing with PHP 7.2, because after installation the “Make Payment” button was disabled — so I’ve reverted back to version 5.5.3. By “disabled” I mean that I got no response to a cursor or touch click of the button in Chrome.

As this is a production site I can do testing, but only for very short time periods. So I’m not sure if this was an issue with the plugin or a browser problem — just that things were restored to full function once I reverted back.

My system is running PHP 7.1 for now. Although I tested with PHP 7.2 I did not want error logs being filled up so after I saw the entries noted above, I did revert back to 7.1. I’m on a CPanel system with multi-PHP options so very easy for me to switch back and forth between PHP release versions.

Thank you — that resolved the problem!

If it is any help with debugging, when the error shows up I see these URLs shown in the browser nav bar:

    First: https://www.paypal.com/auth/validatecaptcha

    Redirecting to:

    https://www.paypal.com/webapps/shoppingcart/error?flowlogging_id=%5Brandom number sequence]&code=ERROR&mfid=[random number sequence]

When the form works, it instead goes to a PayPal URL tha displays as:

    https://www.paypal.com/webapps/hermes?token=%5Brandom number sequence]&useraction=commit&mfid=[random number sequence]

So it does look like some sort of validation issue.

I am also seeing this with the MS Edge browser.

I tested with Firefox and did NOT see the error there.

I am seeing this as well. Also with Google Chrome (but I haven’t tested other browsers)

Mat, I understand but this is a on a busy site and I simply cannot take the site offline right now to go through the process of debugging, and I have no idea which of many plugins could be the source of the problem. I have tested some that I thought were more likely to be causing issues.

I wanted to report the problem in case others were having it, but I can manually enter shortcode if I need to.

If I do discover more information, of course I’ll let you know.

    Mat,
I am using the latest wordpress version, WP 4.9.4

No errors are shown in console before I click the puzzle icon

But as you said you could not replicate I tried a different site and did not have the problem, so I think it must be a conflict with the theme or a plugin.

What I see happen now is that when I click the puzzle icon, the popup briefly appears, but then it redircects to a full page form–and as noted the Generate Button does not work that way, so of course the short code isn’t being entered.

I have tested by disabling some of my plugins but wasn’t able to find the conflict, and I really do not have the time to debug by going through all possible plugin conficts.

I have several other plugins that also have popup forms for entering shortcode tied to the menu, and all of them are working without a problem. It is just this plugin. Do you have a list of known conflicts anywhere?

I haven’t seen this error again since the day I reported it. I would have no way to know whether it was tied to anything in the event edit screen because I only saw the error in logs. I have the community events plugin and also several people have site privileges to create and edit events associated with their accounts so I really have no way to know who has entered what when editing events.

You can revert back to the prior theme with the WP-Rollback plugn – https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-rollback/
