www. prefix not working

Hi all,
I have one wordpress set up and running perfectly but have now set up a second but have an issue where by if I use the www. prefix I get a 404 error.
On my last site (i have checked) i can use either domain.com or http://www.domain.com and the both go to the home page.
On my new site it will only let me go to the home page and the admin login page if i don’t use the www. prefix. Domain.com works fine, http://www.domain.com shows a 404 error. Ideally I want it so either method will still lead to the site.
I certainly don’t remember having to change any coding last time and I have searched for some solutions but without much luck and they seem to be very old posts.
