wp-cycle image size problem

i finally got wp-cycle to install through my ftp because it wouldn’t install through the dashboard. now — i can only upload images less than 500 px width. anything under 500px width works — but if i try 500 and higher — it hangs and nothing happens. i hit “upload” and then get a blank white screen for the main part of the page — the dashboard is still on the left side.
