WP-Admin console blank right pane, except portfolio

    I have a bit of an issue. I am not a wordpress expert and am trying to help someone who knows less than me.

    We have a WordPress install on a HostNine shared hosted server.
    It is very old because the site owner never did any maintenance. 3.3.1 is the version.

    When i logged into the site/wp-admin i was able to login.
    Then i was able to see the left panel but not the right. Except for the Portfolio theme.

    The site is viewable so i don’t want to just kill it and try to start over.
    I need to upgrade it and then redo it.

    Is there a recommendation for doing the upgrade in place in this case?
    If so how do i do that?
