I usually work offline and use BBEdit to format copy as html, complete with all div and other tags.

When I paste this into a WP post in html view, extra p tags are added to any html comments in the code.

How do I prevent this?

Unfortunately, WordPress automatically adds paragraph tags.

You can disable this functionality if you will exclusively be pasting in code from exterior sources:

Further reading suggests that if I disable it, I’ll need to manually add p and br tags to existing posts – so things are perhaps best left as-is.

UPDATE: The plugin wpautop-control appears to offer a sensible fix.
