WordPress.com to .org transition

    Hey everyone, mistakenly I originally opened my site through .com not realizing there was a difference until I realized there were some things I couldn’t do with the blog, nor the domain. A buddy of mine does a lot of work on wordpress themes and framework so I spoke with him on the phone for a while as he laid out all my mistakes to me!

    Anyways, I had used .com to register my new domain, after speaking with Sean I went and opened up a bluehost account, however, I was outside the 2 day window to cancel my original domain (though I am not paying money to .com as it’s “shared” hosting right now. I can’t fully transfer my domain registrar for another 43 days. In the mean time, I have changed nameservers to bluehost, however it seems like anytime I go to check the status on under ‘My Domains’ on the .com side it resets itself to use wordpress.com nameservers. Every time I change it and leave the page it says it has saved, and to give it up to 72 hours. Well, my site is in it’s infancy, without much content, so I’m sure it will not take that long.

    Am I being too hasty when returning to check the nameservers? Also, I would like to be able to fully utilize the .org software version of wordpress. If I do an install from bluehost’s sitebuilder, am I going to end up on the .com side still, or will it install the proper software I want?

    No, you’re not being too hasty, but the time it takes name server changes to propagate isn’t about the amount of content either. 🙂

    When a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, you may also receive a warning message in your browser about “redirect errors.” Unfortunately, your registrar has no control over this as it all depends on how often your internet service provider updates their records.

    If you still have trouble viewing the site after 72 hours have passed, please try clearing your browser’s cache: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

    If that doesn’t work, try clearing your local DNS cache: http://www.opendns.com/support/article/68

    Once your domain has properly propagated, you should be able to install WordPress on your new hosting provider and bring over your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

    Also, please do note that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Here’s my other issues then I guess. My site is currently viewable, however, it still refers me to the wordpress.com dashboard although I have tried to write over the blog with a fresh install through bluehost. The blog itself on the wordpress.com side is not a deletable blog because it was tied to the original domain registration for my site. I’m not really sure where to go from here to be honest. I want to be able to utilize only wordpress.org, and after that 43 day period, fully transfer my domain to bluehost.

    Right, the blog will be wherever the domain is pointing. 🙂

    Please see my first reply above. If the name server change hasn’t propagated for you yet, you’ll still see the blog at WordPress.com.

    When the name server change to Bluehost has finally propagated for you, then you’ll be able to install WordPress on Bluehost and bring over your content following the guide I linked to above.

    Ok, so until the change has propagated when I view the dashboard it is going to still indicate that it’s using ns1.wordpress.com, etc.

    So, then the install itself via bluehost is in essence the same install I would get downloading and installing wordpress from here?

    Sorry for consuming so much of your time with what might seem redundant! I’ve got about 14 tabs open across 2 screens and have a little information overload! I appreciate all the support though!
