• As the title suggests, I have been having a major issue when trying to update to WP 4.4.*. The same issue occurred with 4.4.0 and 4.4.1. When Updating through the admin console, the updater hangs at various parts of the update (Copying required files…, Updating database…, etc.) Once it hangs, my site becomes unresponsive and gives me “This Page Cannot be Found” when attempting to go to any page in the site. It requires me to rewrite a backup of the site overtop of the updated version to clear the issue and get the site back. Depending on when the updater hangs, it also requires a rewrite of a backup of the WP database as well.

I have tried updating with plugins fully updated, with all plugins deactivated, and renaming the plugins folder so they are essentially gone with no luck. I’ve ensured all files are set to the correct permissions and user on the web server to avoid credential issues when updating. I have made little to no updates to the site’s files since 4.3.1 came out and have not touched the WP core files at all. WP_DEBUG gives me nothing to work with either. I also tried manually installing 4.4.1 and the same issue occurs. I will be attempting a file by file overwrite of the 4.4.1 core files this week or early next week, but barring that, I am at a loss.

I have also looked at my Load Balancer’s reporting and after attempting the 4.4.* updates, the LB reports my site as “Refusing requests”. The .maintenance file is also not an issue as it is not in the directory after the site stops working.

  • Hi, animagic, & welcome to the WordPress support forum. Have you perhaps tried logging into your dashboard, changing your theme to a WordPress default 1, like 2015, for example, & then tried doing the update?

In addition, are your error logs showing any error messages?

Could you please let us know if that helps or not?
