It will depends on how you are building it.
For example, if it is a brand new site you can have the coming soon plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/coming+soon/ and then when logged in you will be working on it normally and then on front end it has the coming soon page, some plugins may have the URL to “preview” / bypass the coming soon so you can share with people.
Another good option is via LocalWP for local development, it has a live link option https://localwp.com/help-docs/local-features/live-links/, useful for quick looks when you or your customer want to check the progress.
If those wouldn’t fit then what you described with subdomain is also a valid option, some hosting may have a staging or development area.

Or you can also try setting up a staging site to review the changes you’ve made before syncing it to your main site to go live.

Thanks for the info, sorry it took awhile for me to get back… I only do this part time when I have time. I’ve looked over some of the plugin’s and at least the one’s I’ve looked at reviews for all seem to have the same sort of annoying pay wall problems that I’d rather not have to deal with.
What say I just make the first page of my site a coming-soon landing page with no menu and maybe a hidden button that links to the other pages? Can I remove the header and footer on one page?
One thing I need to do is preview the site on other devices, like phones, since I’ve seen some unexpected results playing around with some test pages… this might be an easy way to make the site “live-ish” to look for problems.
