WordPress pages- keeps showing homepage

Hello,
I’m creating my own theme for a site, which is coming along nicely. I’m having an issue with pages published. I want the site to run on WordPress pages. Eg, no blog, just 4-5 pages.

So I set my frontpage to be the home page, but if I click on about us on my nav bar then it just loads the home page instead of the about us page. I would really appreciate some help on this.
