WordPress in subfolder

Hi

I am redesigning a WordPress site. I have found that wordpress is installed in a subfolder, so it’s http://www.mydomain.com/wp/wp-admin to log in, but to access the site it’s just http://www.mydomain.com.

Is there any reason how and why this would have been done, and is it a good idea to keep it this way?
