First, backup everything: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
Now, it’s best to take that big of an upgrade leap in steps. First, download WordPress 3.5.2 from https://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/
Then, use that to manually upgrade to WordPress 3.5.2: https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended
Once you’re on 3.5.2, upgrade to 4.0 using the automated updated at Dashboard -> Updates in your blog’s Dashboard.

Hi,
Thank you so much for this! Really appreciate your help. Will I need the server information for this backup, contact details for the hoster are still under someone else’s name (which I am trying to have changed)? Wish me luck!
Cheers
Yes, you’ll need access to the server in order to gain FTP and Database access for the backups and the upgrade.

Hi thank you,
Silly question here! I have access to the back end of the website. Do I need details as well from our host company?
Thanks
Maryanne
Yes, you can’t delete and upload the files for the step upgrade to 3.5.2 without FTP or SFTP access.

Hi James,
Ok, I am just starting this process now (have been pulled to other projects). How long will it take to backup and manually upgrade? Are there any considerations re. website being down for a time?
I wonder if it is cheap and easy to engage someone to do it for me? If so how do I go about that? I would prefer to do it myself so I learn but obviously time is money!
Many thanks
Maryanne

I have refreshed all the themes and plugins and it is now running
WordPress 4.0 running Linguini: Restaurant Responsive WordPress Theme theme.
What do I need to do next?
Many thanks!
