I’m working on a new website, at the final stages and I want to install Wordfence (free version). Can I do that while I’m still on the temporary sub domain or do I need to wait till I have moved the website to the main domain? If I do it before the move, will it affect the plugin or?
Hope you can help me out, thanks.

Hi @catbuus, thanks for your question!

The most common issue seen when migrating from a development environment to a live site is when Wordfence is optimized, as the path to your wordfence-waf.php file is not likely to be the same.

The default state on installation is that the firewall is in “basic protection” mode, so keeping it this way until the site is live should ensure the migration doesn’t break anything on your site. It’s highly recommended to optimize once the site is live!

You can also check our migration documentation for further information: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/remove-or-reset/#migrate-with-wordfence

    Thanks,
    Peter.

    Hi Peter

Thank you so much for your answer, that was very helpful.
Do you then recommend waiting to activate and install it until the site is live? Or just be aware of the php file?

    Hi @catbuus,

I have recommended waiting to activate it before going live as we’re unable to troubleshoot any blocking behavior or other issues caused while Wordfence is on a development environment. That’s a perfectly common thing to do although if enabling the plugin works, avoiding optimization until it’s live is your next-best decision to make.

    Thanks again,
    Peter.
