Why does WF require you to have an active browser window in order for it scan or do its thing?

It doesn’t. As soon as the browser window loses focus it stops being updated to save resources. Everything, including scans, still run. When you change back to the browser window with Wordfence, it will resume reporting where it is at. If you want it to report to the browser the entire time, go to the Wordfence > Dashboard > Global Options page on your site and look in the General Wordfence Options section. Uncheck “Pause live updates when window loses focus” and save the changes.
