wootique theme – insert more tags

hi! i’m trying to use the insert more tags in my post using the wootique theme with woocommerce 2.0.20 unfortunately the only thing it does is it cuts the paragraph and it there is no link/ clickable word appearing after the cut paragraph. i’m really new in creating website and tried to follow some similar troubleshooting procedures from other posts however none really worked, here are the list that i have done and to my demised nothing worked.

1.) tried manually encoding this <!–more–> in the text editor.
2.) since my post was previously saved in microsoft word,
a.)i pasted my article directly to the the visual editor
b.)used the paste from word feature
c.) went to the extent of retyping the whole article in the visual editor
3.) tried typing this code in the css stylesheet,
<?php the_content(‘Read on…’); ?>
</p>

and sadly nothing worked, all i want is to for my long article to have a clickable more or …. or what ever so that my article won’t occupy too much space in my first page…..

please help
