Great, thank you.
I googled ‘wordpress releases’ before submitting this post, it gave
https://wordpress.org/news/category/releases/
there’s no 4.9.9 at all
Thanks again.

So, we must manually update to get 4.9.9? Why no option to run from dashboard?
Makes sad face 🙁

I apologise for the sad face, but I don’t know the answer to your query. I was helping this gentleman or lady find the version 4.9.9 of WordPress.
@anevins,
I have 4.9.8 installed. I was seeing update to 5.0 notifications. Now I see 5.01.
What is the update path to 4.9.9 from 4.9.8? Manual install only?
Thanks!

It’s probably manual installation, as downgrading wouldn’t be a recommended option.

WP CLI allows to update to a specific version instead of to the latest version.
https://developer.wordpress.org/cli/commands/core/update/
The webhost was temporarily blocking automatic updates, sites set to update without interference of a plugin or host are automatically updated to 4.9.9 now. A test site I forced to 5.0 was updated to 5.01.
