I have a small blog that I use the free version of Wordfence with. Only today, I logged in to find that Wordfence Security is no longer to be found in the WordPress controls.

When I try to reinstall Wordfence Security, it fails because there is (an empty) wordfence folder in wp-content/plugins

I can find no explanation for any of this. Where did WF go? How was it removed? Is it still safe to use, or will I need something stronger?

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. We don’t automatically uninstall the plugin from our end so you may want to investigate who may have accessed your site. Maybe your hosting company removed it?

If you remove the Wordfence folder in plugins, will it let you reinstall? If you need to delete all of Wordfence’s data, you can use Wordfence assistant.

    Hope that helps,
    Brian

I was able to reinstall Wordfence after removing the empty word fence folder in wp-content/plugins. Within hours, WF emailed me about a suspicious login attempt which used my correct user name but obviously not the correct password. However, this is troubling as my user name is as complex as a password (numbers, letters, cases, symbols). In all previous attempts they are clearly guessing– this person knew it.

    Updated to 6.1.7

Looking at the Live Traffic for the last couple hours, I am getting hundreds of suspicious attempts to access a file named xmlrpc.php. Is this a known attack?

xmlrpc is a pretty common attack point. Here is some more info on it:
