What happened to widgets?

I’m looking for some documentation on widgets, but am coming up with nothing. Did I miss something or are widgets just not documented?

Searching the Codex only gives me information about the old plugin:

Or a page that’s marked as needing editing that has no real useful information:

Searching Google offers up a blog that was last updated in 2007:

http://widgets.wordpress.com/

The documentation for the old plugin:

http://automattic.com/code/widgets/

and other assorted out-dated miscellaneous pages.

So: where’s the current documentation on widgetizing a theme and creating widgets?
