• Okay, today I talked with a new potential client who has found himself in quite the pickle. I’ve exhausted my thoughts as to how to help him, so I am hoping that someone else might have an idea:

He had a falling out with his designer, who was doing his updates for him. I assume he hasn’t had the updates done in awhile because of this; honestly not sure what version he is using.

He has his password saved in his cookies but doesn’t know it himself. From what he was able to tell me over the phone, it seems like he is not his site administrator. I assumed that the designer was still the admin, but when we contacted him, he said he no longer had access to that site.

When I tried talking through resetting his password, just so I could take a look, he got WordPress said they would send an email… but he has not gotten it, and checked alternative email accounts & spam folder.

So, I’ve got this guy, and I have no idea how to get access to the back end of his site.

I am working with him to try to get information about how to login to his host server, but the designer is not being cooperative on that front.

Do I have any other way of getting admin access to this site? This is definitely a proper mess!

If he has the login saved in a cookie still, meaning he can get into the Dashboard without logging in, he could just change his password at Users -> Your Profile in the Dashboard.

If he can’t get into the Dashboard, then that cookie has expired anyway, and you’ll need access to the database to change his password (since something is apparently wrong with the server’s ability to send email). For that, follow this guide: https://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password#Through_phpMyAdmin

There are other options available on that page, but they aren’t as direct as changing the password right in the database, and they still require server access.

Thanks for your help. We tried changing his password under Users, but he never got the confirmation email from WordPress.

I will hopefully get access to the database, and will follow those steps.

    Thanks again!

That sounds very odd. To change your password in Users -> Your Profile, you either accept the randomly generated password it shows you, or you type in your own, there’s no email involved with that.

There must be something else at play, modifying how user accounts operate.
