• Hi,

I just switched from wordpress.com to a self-hosted wordpress.org with Bluehost. After pointing the name servers to my new hosting, I noticed some problems. I don’t know if they are related, or just 2 separate things:

    1. My website won’t open anymore if people use https:// . I learned this from a Bluehost rep. I don’t really know what this means, or why this changed, but I can’t access my own site until I get rid of the “s”. I don’t think I made the choice to access my site that way and therefore I don’t know how many other people have their default settings to https:// ? I was told I can purchase SSL authentication for $50/yr.

    2. Since making the switch, I’ve had no new traffic to my site. Before, I was getting about 100 visitors a day, mainly from google search. I don’t know if this is because other people also have their browser default to “https” or if it’s another problem entirely.

Hoping that someone can shed some light on these issues. Thanks!

  • Hi,

if you don’t have your site setup to work with https then it won’t.Your hosting company should be able to tell you if you did that.

As for the traffic, i don’t know why you don’t get traffic, did you setup your GA analytics? did you change your domain name?

wordpress.com defaulted to https recently so all of your links are now configured that way. It is good to run your site secure, but at least to have ssl for your login so you are not sending your password in cleartext.

Google also gives you a slight rank boost for ssl.
