• I’m having issues with my web developer who I’ve used for years. My site was down for weeks now he tells me the data base was lost. He asked me to longer contact him and that all the files are still available and to have someone new reinstall everything. I’ve paid $1,500 for my site (with no contract). I’ve been able to make photo and content updates on my own. However I haven’t the slightest idea what to do moving forward. From what I can tell there’s nothing in the back end. I feel lost and loosing income with my site being down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • So, all of the uploads in you “wp-content” folder are still there? Also, what host are you using?

He emailed again saying all the files are there. When I go to the backed I see absolutely nothing. All of the pages were created by a different graphic designer. He made it function as a site. It was a basic makeup site with maybe 8 different pages/ email contact entry page / two slideshows / services / about page. He hosted my sites and many other for two years using bluehost. I called them but don’t have access to the account.

He says the site being down is not his fault as it was made two years ago. Am I crazy to think he needs to fix this?

I REALLY appreciate the referral. I’m angry so manners have gone out the window for the moment. I have the pages created in adobe illustrator.

Is the site currently available at all, or is it completely offline?

@ mark senff this is my site jolie-beauty.com He set up a page but that’s not my normal homepage. He insisted on hosting the site (to profit as he hosted multiple sites) Is there anything I can do to hold him accountable? Over $1,000 to just set it up. I’m contacting a few people on Envato now.

Personally, if my developer charged $1000 for what I see at jolie-beauty.com (one page with pretty much no content whatsoever), then I would definitely go somewhere else indeed.

Holding him accountable is a different story, as you said there’s no contract or anything.

I think this is more a question of the developer having the proper files or not, than an actual technical question. If the database is gone, you have to try and figure out why that is. Perhaps it’s still there but the developer is clueless.

Was the site always hosted by him?

@sarabwilson35, are you still able to login to the admin panel? If you are, click the post link, and see if your posts & pages are still there.

    Hi @marc & Mark,

I finally heard back from my web guy who gave me the files to download from the ftp site of bluehost (where the sites are held under his account) Because he has a VPS account they don’t offer migration. Have any recommendations on how to find someone to make a smooth transfer? My main site which is eccomerce is still up and running so I want to avoid a long down time with the switch. Where should I look to find someone experienced with this?

p.s. I’ll be starting a new account and ultimatley need the files transferred and up and running…..
