I have a post on my site which gives the message as an “OK” warning:

“The images on this page do not have alt attributes containing the focus keyword.”

However, I have checked the images in my post and they do indeed contain the Focus Keyword. I have made sure that this is set explicitly on the instances of the images included in the post, and not just in the Media Library (where they may have been added after the images were inserted into the post), but I still get this message.

I am right that the alt attribute of at least one image in the post simply needs to contain the Focus Keyword, rather than being equal to the Focus Keyword, right? If so, why would I be getting this message when I can see there are images in the post where the Focus Keyword appears in the alt attribute?

  • Hi,

At least one image on the post/page needs to contain the focus keyword exactly as it is exactly specified. See images for example: https://pasteboard.co/GPpbCDQ.png and here https://pasteboard.co/GPpbRAk.png.

Why Yoast is not recognizing the focus keyword as it is contained in that alt-text field we are not sure. We would like some more information.
-Can you confirm the keyword is exactly contained in that field? It is spelled correctly, etc?
-Are you using any grammatical or special characters in the alt-text? If so, can you let us know what they are by copy/pasting the alt-text or taking a screenshot?
-If you re-save the post/page does the issue resolve?
-Is it happening anywhere else, or just on that post/page?

Firstly, thanks for the Rickroll in the second screenshot, lol!

The focus keyword is “Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa” – is the fact that this contains an apostrophe and/or and ampersand potentially part of the issue? I have checked, double checked and triple checked that the focus keyword appears exactly in the alt attribute (I even copied and pasted it there to make sure), so I can’t think of anything other than the non-alphanumeric characters which could be the issue?

Re-saving/updating the post does not resolve the issue and it is only happening on this post so far (I’m still working through all of the published posts to work on their SEO).

    Hello,
The apostrophe and ampersand in the Focus Keyword are expected to be recognized correctly in the alt attribute in the image.
Are you perhaps using a visual page builder? We know that there are cases where the Yoast plugin is unable to properly analyze the content in some visual page builder content modules.

    Hi @marcanor, thanks for replying.

I have a “Visual Composer” option in my wpadmin menu, so I guess the answer’s yes. Looking at the About page within this section, it’s this (version 5.1.1): https://vc.wpbakery.com/.

I can’t see any way to temporarily turn Visual Composer off in order to 100% validate that my alt attribute values are good according to Yoast, so I guess I’ll just have to trust that it’s all fine and ignore this warning if I see it in the future and I’ve checked there are alt attributes which contain the focus keyword?

A bug report is currently open in our development repository regarding the issue you’re experiencing. You can follow the progress of the report here.

On the other hand, if you know for sure that you’ve added the focus keyword in the image alt attribute, you can simply ignore the Yoast SEO analysis relevant warning and Google won’t have any issues with finding the alt attributes from your images.

Hi @mazedulislamkhan – is the bug report you linked to definitely for the same issue? That seems to be talking about images not being recognised by Yoast at all, rather the it not correctly identifying that the image alt attribute contains the focus keyword.

The only mention I see of the alt attribute not containing the focus keyword is in the screenshot giving an example of where images are picked up by Yoast when using a WYSIWYG editor…

Good to know Yoast is on GitHub though, I can follow now and see what’s being worked on. 🙂

We apologize for providing a non-relevant GitHub issue URL. If you’re adding the image using the Visual composer, can you please let us know what Visual composer module you’re using to add the image on your site?

In addition, can you please let us know how did you add the image alt attribute? I mean from the media (library) or when adding the image to the Visual composer module?

On the other hand, if you look at the provided GitHub issue comments section, you’ll see that a user made a comment about the image alt attribute issue when using the Visual Composer.

We have another issue open related to the image alt attribute. The Yoast SEO plugin is unable to detect the image alt attribute when the alt attribute includes Ampersand. You can find the relevant issue here. So, please make sure that you’re not using the Ampersand in your alt attribute and focus keyword.

Hi @mazedulislamkhan – as mentioned above, I have a “Visual Composer” option in my wpadmin menu and looking at the About page within this section, it’s this (version 5.1.1): https://vc.wpbakery.com/.

I originally had the alt attribute values added to the image in my media library, but I then also added them to the images directly on the post as I realised the values added to the media library may have been added after the images were included in the post, as per my original post:

“I have made sure that this is set explicitly on the instances of the images included in the post, and not just in the Media Library (where they may have been added after the images were inserted into the post)”

Thanks for the link to the issue regarding ampersands and apostrophes in Focus Keywords, that seems to be my issue, so I’ll look to remove this character from my focus keywords accordingly and monitor the GitHub project for a fix in the future.
