Visual/HTML tabs not working

    This is not the first time I’ve set up WordPress, but it’s the first time I’ve seen this problem.

    The HTML tab is greyed out. The content as viewed in the Visual tab … fades in and out? I did the classic 5 minute install. I’m talking about the default text for the sample post. I’ve changed nothing else – its the default template, etc. I reviewed the forums and did some of the things suggested – cleared cache, tried two different browsers (current versions of Chrome and Firefox for MacOS), but cannot see any difference between this and previous installs (for other clients) except that this isn’t allowing me to edit. The same thing happens if I try a new post.
