V 4.4.2 automatic update failed dashboard display mostly unusable
-
The site appears ok to browse
backend dashboard has lost normal appearance and functionality
items display in a list
At the bottom of the page the update to 4.5 is covered by other menu items, as if there was a display behind an active display.I had my host(Ipage) support chat person look at site, they saw the problem also but could not repair it

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the
wp-config.phpfile and the/wp-content/directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
Thanks James, I just got this email back from Ipage, and it seems to be attacking the problem exactly as you suggested (except it would have taken me days to figure it out on my own) I am posting this at the three other places with similar issues as a possible solution for others that doesn’t require so much hands on. I hope this is helpful
I contacted my host (Ipage) support, and got the message down below these comments–it fixed the problem. Maybe this will help others who know how to fiddle with files directly on the host server
I had asked if there was a backup on my host, and was told there was not, so I purchased the 12.50/year package not thinking it would have a usable backup, with the horse out of the barn already, but maybe they automatically keep backups (whether you pay for them or not)or….i don’t know what else, but it seems to have worked retroactively
whatever, my site dashboard is back up
Hello Bob,
I have restored the wp-admin folder from the backup and now the WordPress dashboard at: http://www.permaculturebob.com/wp-admin/ is displaying fine. You can upgrade the WordPress application now. Please check once again and if there any issues, let us know.
update–The dashboard displays correctly at times, I was able to edit comments, but not publish new posts- as soon as i try it reverts to that convoluted double layer with many controls inaccessible.
also, as soon as I tried to look at a draft post it reverts back and i’m unable to publish because that control is displayed under the others
I was able to click the 4.5 update, but then it reverted and controls became messed up. this is a screen shot of the problem
I have to do other things now, but I’m guessing the backup was corrupted so whatever allows me to get the appearance of a useful dashboard is still not supported by good code.
Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.
If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to
/wp-content/themes/and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).I have not attempted your first suggestion yet, website is a lesser priority than a high pressure 42″ gas pipeline that wants to come through my front “yard”.
I was somewhat uncertain, but my understanding was to manually update the wp files directly in the host by substituting the files from the 4.5 download. Since i have enough functionality to limp around in the dashboard, i planned to not delete files, just rename so they could be retrieved later if the 4.5 update wasn’t compatible or something. (I’m assuming the content and php folders are still compatible with the new 4.5 update)
I have meanwhile deactivated all plugins, with the same interesting combinations of marginal dysfunction in the dashboard.
I’m thinking now just for giggles to go ahead and reactivate everything and see what happens, just in case i can avoid all the manipulation of folders in the host (i really am lazy)
Oh, if this matters at all, in the all posts summaries I was finally able to publish a saved draft, although if i go directly to create new post the same nonsense comes back, then i backspace into the previous window where the dashboard looks pretty good.
when i update the themes (which display normally) I go into the dysfunction when i hit the button, and then backspace to the now updated theme and preview and all without incident.
so things are working, just not quite.
I do appreciate the time you’ve taken here– I did post links on two other similar threads I found to your first comment, so this may reach a few other people, if you haven’t already seen them.
Probably later tonight I’ll have time to play with this, and will keep you posted. Thanks again, Bob
Ok, please let us know how it goes when you’re done.
thanks for the zilla link, logged in with ftp last night and studied different files in the wp folders, I think I have a plan, but it will wait for tonight.
Oh, i tried activating, deactivating plugins, even changed theme to swift, but the dashboard still has some commands where it just goes nuts. I can click on the 4.5 update link, but as soon as i do it’s nuts and then i can’t click on it again. still haven’t found that easier softer way
Can you provide more explanation on “goes nuts”?
sorry about the “goes nuts” I was just referring to the same stuff that has been happening right along. screen shot
This isn’t my screen, but someone else had the same problem and my screen is identical.at least at the bottom, the top is just the list of menu items on a plain white background,
Hm, it’s like it can’t load or can’t find the styles.
Can you get to Settings -> General at all (
/wp-admin/options-general.php)? If so, what do you have set for the WordPress and Site Addresses?http://www.permaculturebob.com for both
Ok, your files seem to be there.
Are there any JavaScript errors reported in your browser console?

LOL thanks to all the gods of ftp and forums, specifically James Huff
your original suggestion, while a bit tedious fixed the problem exactly–at least my initial test didn’t send the system into chaos when i asked for a new post,
When i refreshed the website wp asked to update the database, which it did automatically, and a couple minutes later I had the new post screen in front of me waiting for my inspiration.
I’m sorry i can’t really debug the problem, it sounded like you were on the trail,if you have any questions about how it used to act, ask fast, my memory isn’t what it used to be 🙂
thanks again James I’ll post my success in those other threads–i had already posted links back to here before.
While this approach seems to be more a shotgun than a scalpel, it worked quite well–I’m guessing that is just the way one might manually install wp, guess I learned something
Yep, that’s why I suggested it first. 😉
oh, moving everything to backup except the two files (your wording was delete everything on the server except…) will give a 403 error. only replace the files in the4.5 download (except config and content of course) I think other files are there that help the host keep track of things and deleting them would be disastrous.
