Using WP plugins with Wuh-Wuh

I’ve searched and cannot find a specific answer to this question, so here goes.
I recently installed the “Wuh-Wuh” version of WordPress. Mainly because the one-click backup appeals to me (and at the time of the 1.2 rollout, it didn’t seem to be available, although now to my great delight, I find it IS). Anyway, meanwhile, I wanted to use a couple of WordPress plugins that I found; namely, Text Replace and Faked Folders. I’ve tried putting these darn *.php files everywhere, modifying the menu.txt file and these two plugins seem not to be working in Wuh-Wuh. What am I doing wrong?
