Have you considered Buddypress? That in conjunction with something like
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wordpress-membership-lite/
or
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/pay-per-view/
I know others have done similar things, I’ve seem then asking around on premium.wpmudev.org 🙂
one of these days i really need to learn buddypress. what features would buddypress bring to an e-course that aren’t in regular wordpress? ie… how are those plugins different from say E-Member, s2member, membership, etc?
I offered Buddypress in reference to your request for a membership front end, it is more of a social tool, allowing groups, profiles and activity feed. It’s not really a Membership plugin, but enhances the membership experience 🙂

There is so much in WordPress! I’d never heard of it for a very long time after using WordPress 🙂
