• Hello,

I have been trying unsuccessfully to upload a theme I customized.

I have renamed the theme. Save the theme folder into:

    MAMP/htdocs/katiewalsh/blog/wp-content/themes

I have then condensed the new theme folder into a zip folder.

When I go onto wordpress.org to upload the theme I get this message:

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the theme…

    Destination folder already exists. /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/KatieWalsh/blog/wp-content/themes/KatieWalshtheme/

    Theme install failed.

When I look up other forums or blogs for suggestions, it appears that I am doing everything right.

    PLEASE HELP!!! thanks!

  • Katie,
The meaasge says it all, you already have the theme folder, so re-name the new zip file, or the existing folder and try again.

In a production environment you would ftp the files and or folder, replacing all or the changed files.

In a local environment just explore find the folder and copy the files across.

    Hi David,

    Thank you for the response.

I followed your directions and renamed the zip file as well as the new theme folder.

However, when I go to upload the theme again I get the same message.

    Ah!
You say you have condensed the themes folder inside the zip, I think you may have to re-name the folder and re-zipp it!

As a rule I navigate to the themes folder, select all folders and files, right mouse and select send to zip, then I just name the zip, I do not have the themes folder inside.

WordPress then creates a folder with the zip name, I use all lower case with no spaces, like katie-Walsh-theme.zip

Ugh, I give up for the time being. Thank you for your time and help!

I did not condense the themes folder inside of the zip.

I renamed my customized theme “design”. Therefore the folder that contains this theme is called “design”. I then condensed this folder. Right beneath the design folder is the “design.zip”.

I then try to upload this zip file into wordpress.org and get the same message.

I keep making changes in dreamweaver and everything seems a okay in there. (my header and background that I uploaded is loading okay).

Your theme should be in a folder called “design”. This folder should then be condensed into design.zip & uploaded.

Thanks, I had problems with a folder inside a zip before, that was a while ago, maybe it was a plugin, but it created a folder with another inside.

Maybe change the theme name in the style.css, zipp-it and test it again.

Yes, that is what I did.

    htdocs/KatieWalsh/blog/wp-content/themes/design

That design folder is then zipped.

I upload that file and get the failure message.

Have you tried just uploading the theme folder to wp-content/themes via FTP?

no I haven’t. I’m doing this for a class and was told to do it this way.

I can try to use filezila. But it still doesn’t help me with not knowing how to properly do it with the uploading themes option directly with wordpress.org.

    Thanks for the help, Katie

Are u on some kind of local server install ?

I have renamed the theme. Save the theme folder into:
    MAMP/htdocs/katiewalsh/blog/wp-content/themes

If you already have a copy of the theme in wp-content/themes, why are you trying to re-upload a zipped copy?
